Auditions for Beauty and the Beast

**********A*U*D*I*T*I*O*N*S**********

Southwest Playhouse and directors Jill Berrong and Elizabeth McLean announce auditions for this tale as old as time, “Beauty and the Beast.”

Auditions will be by video submission. If you are interested in being considered for “Beauty and the Beast,” please send a video or video link (from YouTube or Vimeo) of yourself singing your best 16 bars (approximately 30 seconds) from the character for which you are auditioning. If you are auditioning for more than one character, you may select 16 bars from one of the other characters of interest and submit a second video. Please limit vocal video submissions to your top two preferences. Prepare a monologue that is 30-60 seconds in length (this may also come from the movie, Beauty and the Beast). If you are auditioning for a character that has an accent (Lumiere and Babette - French; Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts and Madame De La Grande Bouche - British), please showcase this accent in your monologue.

For best results, place your recording device on a stationary object, such as a tripod or table. Do not tape a close-up; have your entire body (from head to toe) in the frame. Prior to recording, test that you are in focus and well lit, and that your video is free from distracting background noise. State your name, age, and role(s) for which you would like to be considered.

***All video auditions should be submitted to jillsy007@yahoo.com no later than 8 p.m. October 30.***

Included in your e-mail, list any conflicts October 30 - February 20. A confirmation e-mail will be sent with an audition form to complete. If you are unable to complete a video submission, but would like to audition, please e-mail Jill Berrong at jillsy007@yahoo.com for alternative arrangements.

Call backs will be held in person, if needed, Monday, November 1 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Southwest Playhouse.

If you are interested in being part of “Beauty and the Beast” in some other capacity, please e-mail jillsy007@yahoo.com with your area of interest.

Rehearsals for November and December will be weekend rehearsals for music and choreography. They are scheduled November 6, 7, 20, and 21, and December 4 and 5. The rehearsals for January-February are to be determined.

Synopsis

“The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed into his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.” - Music Theatre International

Seussical the Musical a Hit!

Through sickness and in health, Seussical the Musical at Southwest Playhouse marched on through all adversity to be an almost entirely sold out show! With a cast of over 60 of our favorite Southwest Playhouse faces, the seats were packed every night with people of all ages to see this fabulous production.

Though on the surface Seussical can seem only whimsical and bright, the underlying lessons of acceptance, open-mindedness, bravery, and self-confidence were evident in this production. Mark Henry was, as always, extremely entertaining in his role as The Cat in the Hat. Braxton Driskill was everyone's darling as the adorable and free-thinking JoJo. Emmi Madden made us laugh, and she made us cheer for her ridiculously cute and sweet Gertrude McFuzz, and Lane Gatley moved us all with his beautiful voice and sweet character as Horton the Elephant.

The stage was full of many other amazingly talented actors, and each and every one of them added to the quality of the show, as the ensemble pieces showed the hard work put in by all. The costumes were beautiful and the lighting added so much to the stage and set. Overall, Seussical the Musical was a hit Southwest Playhouse is very proud of.

4th Annual Christmas Serenade Sets New Fundraising Record!

The very first Christmas Serenade in December of 2016 was mostly an experiment. The Board of Directors and Ashley Underwood, the director of the Serenade, weren't really sure what to expect. SWPH had just hosted a wonderfully successful 50th Anniversary show, and everyone thought a yearly event celebrating the talents of our SWPH performers would be a good way to raise some extra money and offer the city of Clinton a Christmas Community event.

That first year, the Christmas Serenade raised $1,960.00, a number the board and the director were extremely pleased with. There were approximately 100 attendees, and about 20 people in the cast. SWPH declared it a success, and looked forward to the following year.

The 2nd Serenade showed everyone that that $1,960.00 was something that could be and would be blown out of the water. With the additions of sponsors, and an ever-growing silent auction, the 2nd Serenade brought in over $4,000.00! That was over twice the amount from the previous year. The 3rd Serenade continued to grow, raising $4,823.00, and this year, Ashley said her goal was to break $5,000.00.

Little did she know she was dreaming too small.

After all of the money was counted twice. After all of the checks were received in the mail, the 4th Annual Christmas Serenade, with over 200 attendees and 38 cast members, raised $7,300.00. The Board of Directors will decide how best to use these funds to help make the theater an even better place to perform and be a patron. Now that the new seating is in place, the sky is the limit, and the future is looking very bright for Southwest Playhouse.

Thank you again to our amazing patrons for making the Christmas Serenade so successful. Don't miss our next production, Seussical the Musical, in February of 2020!

Two compelling stories come together in this heartwarming play inspired by the famous editorial Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. On Christmas Eve, 1897, in New York City, eight-year-old Virginia is left pondering whether or not Santa really exists after a series of unhappy events. Virginia wondered and wrote: "Dear Editor, I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says if you see it in the Sun, it's so. Please tell me the truth. Is there a Santa Claus?" Ed Mitchell, the Sun's editor, gives the assignment of answering Virginia's letter to Frank Church who, until his wife and baby died last Christmas Eve, was the Sun's best and most dependable reporter. Yes Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus is a play for young and old, magically reaffirming life's highest beauty and joy—"the eternal light with which childhood fills the world."

This award-winning, critically acclaimed Broadway classic is an all-American institution, thanks to is quirky characters, charmingly predictable dramatic situations and one-of-a-kind, nostalgic score of rousing marches, barbershop quartets and sentimental ballads, which have become popular standards. The cast features a soaring soprano ingenue, parts for young performers and children, and one of the musical theatre's treasures, a tour de force leading role for a charismatic actor. The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band that he vows to organize – this, despite the fact that he doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain's fall. Music Theatre International
